In Loving Memory of Ashley B. Pruitt

Ashley B. Pruitt Death, Obituary: With profound sorrow and deep respect, we honor the life and service of Tech. Sgt. Ashley B. Pruitt, a devoted airman, loving mother, and proud member of the United States military, who tragically lost her life in a military aircraft crash in western Iraq. At just 34 years old, Ashley’s passing is a heartbreaking loss to her family, her fellow service members, and the nation she served with unwavering dedication.

Ashley hailed from Bardstown, where she grew up surrounded by a large and loving family. Those who knew her best describe her as “radiant”—a light in every room, someone whose presence brought warmth, strength, and positivity to others. Her husband, Gregory Pruitt, shared that simple yet powerful word to capture who she was: a bright spirit whose impact could never be measured.

Beyond her remarkable military career, Ashley was a devoted mother. She leaves behind her 3-year-old daughter and her stepson, who will grow up carrying the legacy of her love, strength, and sacrifice. To her family, she was not only a hero in uniform but the heart of their home.

Ashley joined the military nine years ago, committing herself to a path of service and excellence. Over the course of her career, she deployed overseas multiple times and accumulated nearly 900 combat flight hours, demonstrating both skill and courage in demanding and high-risk environments. She also pursued her education with determination, earning two associate degrees from the Community College of the Air Force.

Most recently, Ashley served with the 99th Air Refueling Squadron based at Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base. In her role as assistant flight chief of operations, she was also an instructor responsible for operating the boom on the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker—a critical function that allows aircraft to refuel midair and continue missions without landing. Her expertise ensured that countless missions could be carried out safely and effectively.

The tragic crash occurred while the aircraft was supporting operations in the region, in what officials described as “friendly” airspace. The incident, which involved another aircraft, remains under investigation by United States Central Command. Ashley was among six U.S. service members who lost their lives in the crash—a solemn reminder of the risks faced by those who serve, even outside direct combat.

Ashley’s life was defined by courage, commitment, and compassion. She balanced the demands of military service with the love she gave to her family, embodying strength in every aspect of her life. Her fellow airmen remember her not only as a skilled professional but as a mentor, leader, and friend.

Today, we remember Ashley not only for how she died, but for how she lived—with purpose, passion, and a deep sense of duty. Her sacrifice will never be forgotten, and her legacy will continue to inspire all who hear her story.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her children, her husband, her family, and her fellow service members during this incredibly difficult time.

Rest in peace, Tech. Sgt. Ashley B. Pruitt. Your light, your service, and your sacrifice will forever be remembered.
