Gibbs High School Lockdown Today – Authorities respond to threat at Gibbs High School in Knoxville, TN

Students and staff at Gibbs High School were placed under a safety lockdown earlier today after local authorities responded to reports of a potential threat on campus.

Around mid‑morning, school administrators initiated a lockdown, a common safety protocol used to protect students and teachers when a possible danger is reported on or near school property. During a lockdown, doors are secured and students are kept inside classrooms until officials can assess the situation and provide an “all clear.”

School officials immediately communicated the lockdown through internal announcements and alerted local law enforcement. Officers from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Knoxville police arrived on site to investigate the reported threat. First responders secured the area and began speaking with students and staff to determine the nature of the incident.

At this time, officials have not confirmed any injuries or specific details about a suspected perpetrator. Parents were notified through the school’s messaging system and asked to remain patient as authorities worked to verify information.

Lockdowns are employed when there’s a believed risk to the safety of those inside a building. During a lockdown, classrooms are locked and students are kept out of sight until law enforcement gives clearance that it’s safe. These procedures are part of standard emergency response plans designed to minimize harm and ensure order during uncertain situations.

In past years, Gibbs High School and other schools in Knox County have experienced similar lockdowns triggered by a range of issues — including precautionary safety responses, classroom incidents, or reported threats that ultimately turned out to be nonviolent. Some past lockdowns were the result of minor classroom incidents or false alarms, and no one was harmed.

The sheriff’s office and police continue investigating the situation. Once they determine there is no longer any danger, the campus lockdown will be lifted and normal school activities will resume.

Officials ask parents and guardians to monitor official school and law enforcement channels for updates and to avoid spreading unconfirmed information on social media. More details will be shared as soon as they become available.
