The southeast Iowa community is reeling after a tragic head-on crash on Highway 2 claimed the lives of David Downen, 61, of Moulton, Iowa, Kobi Roberts, 25, of La Plata, Missouri, and Jesse Smith, 56, of Unionville, Iowa on Sunday night, March 15, 2026.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the collision occurred just before 9:30 p.m., near the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 63 South. Downen was driving westbound in the eastbound lane when his SUV collided with an oncoming vehicle driven by Roberts. Jesse Smith, a passenger in Roberts’ SUV, was also caught in the impact.
All three individuals were transported to Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. Tragically, David Downen succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while Roberts and Smith were also fatally injured. The crash has left families and friends devastated, and the sudden loss has sent shockwaves through the local communities.
Those who knew David, Kobi, and Jesse remember them for their kindness, warmth, and the ways they touched the lives of those around them. Their passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of loved ones, neighbors, and friends who are now mourning their untimely deaths.
